Both of the drivers were very friendly and forthcoming. We had been given a card with phone number and after our dinner we didn’t have to wait long before the hotel bus arrived. After a walk along the pier and back we had dinner in a Japanese/Asian restaurant, close by the pickup spot of the shuttle. It is a 10-15 minute drive to Manhattan and we were dropped close to the pier. An enormous good service, no hassle about directions and parking (and we could both drink a few glasses of wine with our dinner).

Although we were there with our own rental car, in the early evening we used the hotel shuttle to bring us to Manhattan Beach. (From the pool we could hear from a distance the metro and all the announcements, but this didn’t bothered us at all.) There is a spacious business center, to be opened with the room key, with computers and printers. We had a great afternoon sunbathing and swimming. There is a lovely swimming pool area, with good sun beds and a whirlpool, surrounded with nice palm trees and green borders.

We were a little worried about the noise, hearing so much from this station outside, but luckily when we were in the room, we didn’t hear anything. The bathroom was clean and had soft towels. The room was nice, two comfortable beds, an easy chair, a working desk with chair, coffee/tea facilities (with real cups, no plastic), a fridge and microwave.

However there was no upgrade for my Diamond HHonors membership. The staff at the front desk was friendly. We arrived round noon and to our pleasure there was already a room available. Only after I had gotten my bagel and oatmeal, a Hilton employee came up to me and informed me that this breakfast was not free and I would be charged $12 for the continental breakfast. I grabbed a plate and popped a bagel in the toaster. There were no signs and there was no hostess, so I assumed the breakfast was free (as it is at most motels/inns/B&B type places. At the lobby, I walked to the area with continental breakfast. When you go to the front desk, the hotel charges a higher fee than written on the signs: $20 a night. Many of the signs are partially covered up by trees and branches that have not been trimmed in a long time- the signs are very easy to miss and your car might be towed if you park there assuming it’s an open lot. In the parking lot, there are tiny signs that you can only see if you look closely indicating a $18 per day charge for parking. Most annoyingly, the hotel has fees that feel hidden. The carpet on the first floor was peeling up with large (~2 inch high) ripples in the carpet that could be a trip hazard for old people. 2 of the exterior door locks did not function and would not unlock. The common areas are also poorly maintained. My bathroom wall was filled multiple holes drilled into it that were never patched. This Hilton Garden Inn is one of the worst Hilton properties I’ve ever stayed at.
